Korean Noodles

Grabbed some noodles with black bean sauce in Korea Town. Actually I don't know what it is but
thats my guess is. Haha. I know its just DAMN good and worth the drive. I usually do quick sketches here while waiting for the food. They had the usual generic paper mats like in so many eateries but today the restaurants got some new fancy paper mats with texture on them. Good teeth but hard to get details. Reminds me the paper textures in photoshop and painter.
The best paper mats I remember are from a place called Bill and Nada's Cafe. It had the proprietors Bill and Nada in the Center and all the U.S president from Washington to Clinton before the place went under a wrecking ball. I miss that place.

Drew this guy having a serious
conversation with an elderly companion.He's one of those hip aging dads of my generation. All he needed was a scooter.
It's always an exhilarating challenge to capture the moment in real time. The subject is always changing his or her expression and body language. Oh what to choose! It's like that scene in Amadeus where Mozart wishes he had two heads because all the wigs are pretty. Well I'm no Mozart but the joy of choosing among so many beautiful objects is always rekindled whenever I start sketching a scene thats thats unfolding right in front of me. Sketching people that know that they are being watched is the worst because they become self conscious and who can blame them. A person will strike three poses in a "normal" conversation. Leaning in, out or neutral. My subject came back to this head on the hand pose often so I gambled on it. I went for the face and the anguished brows and threw in his hands. I should have pushed the body angle ... I got his body during a neutral pose. So active head and neutral body. That'll be an easy fix in photoshop.hehe As I was drawing this guy I'm thinking what's his story. Judging by his body language my guesstimation is that his problems are so heavy he needs his hand and arm to prop his troubles up that and to display his grief and stress to his friend.
Well before I could get to his friend she stood up and left. Then this became a completely
different story. Oh I wish I had TWO heads!

Finally got to check Joanna Quinns exquisite "Dreams and Desires" . Just Wow.
Her Lucien Freud bulked fiqures quiver with life and personality. Oh I just love her
caricatures! Every frame is just felt. You might know her work in the states by
the Charmins commercials with a lovable bear squeezing toilet paper. Just charming. She
can sell anything with her animation chops. There 's a link with a interview on the

We had Keith posing as a heartbroken cowboy. I didn't come up with anything so
I stole an idea from my friend Tim. It the cowboy lamenting over his horse.

He can contort into poses that keeps you scratching your head. Lucky for
me he can get into characters just as twisted and expressive as his poses.

Anna ordered a used bible for a penny through Amazon and to
my delight I found scribbles between the front and back flaps that took me back
to the stone age. I thought of my best friends in elementary, middle and high school.
"Friends for ever" must been for girls because we called each other pally wally's.
"We'll always be pally wally's!" we shouted moving on to middle school.
Sadly we only met only once after college. I remembered he was into making
explosives so maybe it was a good thing.haha. Oh, the mischief this guy dragged me into.
I'm sure all you guys and gals have that special first pal. So this one is dedicated to
Mario Russo my first Pally Wally! Brian and Phil are damn lucky.

Saw cars over the weekend. My friend and I both
enjoyed the film for its heart and Paul Newmans voice.
I thought the animation was just amazing as usual.
I didn't really connect with the other "cars" in Radiator Springs though.
Their characters seemed flat and except for the VW Bus and Jeep I don't know
why they are in the picture or why we should care. The characters were stereotypes
that we've seen and joked about since forever which makes them very cliche. I wish they had
more personality. I much preferred the cartoonedversions of the cheering RV's. The Big guy with the little nose was hilarious.
I think the main reason I got pulled out from time to time is I kept wondering what are the
rules in this world. There are car bugs and car cows but they look just like the everyone else.
Spoiler Here............Its like if we said lets go cowtipping and suddenly we see grandpa snoozing away. WAIT we cant Tip Grandpa. It's Cruel! To be fair my other friends didn't mind it very
much. Oh well to each their own. All I know is The formula at Pixar is tight! Take any object
and put it in their story structure. Man it works on anything. Try it it's good eatin'!

An Evening with Brothers Quay

Very insightful lecture tonight. The identical twin brothers shared their early films, influences and commercials. They leave room for luck to happen in their work. On more than one occassion happy accidents galvanized their final film. What drives them is curiosity. You can see it every work. A drawer being pulled. Looking through windows and opening doors. The deer antler plays a role in their work too. Yeah you had to be there.
